In the morning, they woke up, still wrapped in each other’s arms. The entwined candle wicks had burned down together into a heart shaped lump of pink wax. Roman broke the wax part down the middle and gave half to Julia.

“Until I can get you a ring,” he said, “You must be satisfied with taking half my heart. I love you so much I cannot live without you. Just as this candle has burned down together, so, if your life ends, mine will end, too, just like Romeo and Juliet.”

She accepted the wax half heart. “If your life ends, so with mine,” she declared, caressing his cheek as she spoke. “Just like Romeo and Juliet.”

The wax glowed and the glow expanded, surrounding them with a ring of sparkles. They blinked at each other in surprise. Roman’s eyes widened so much that Julia giggled nervously.

“I hope that’s a good omen,” she said.

They went to the lake and found someone serving fresh fish roasted over an open fire for breakfast.

“I’ve been thinking,” said Roman. “You still should graduate.”

Julia almost choked on her bite of fish. “No!”

“Listen to me,” he said. “I’m going to get a job and save money. When you graduate, we’re moving in together, far away from here. But I don’t want to be the reason you drop out.”

Just then, they saw an older woman hurrying toward them. She had salt and pepper hair, and a distinctly Elven look, though her ears were rounded like a human. She wore a long orange and gold maxi-dress, with a belt of gold chains around her hips. A storm frowned upon her brow.

She pointed at them. “Are you to the ones who purchased the Romeo and Juliet candle?”

They glanced at each other and then at her.

“We did nothing wrong,” Roman said defensively. “I paid for the candle, the price that the girl in the booth gave me.”

“That’s not the problem,” said the woman shaking her head. “I am Carin Asbury, the High Priestess of the Fire Coven. Please tell me you haven’t used the candle yet!”

“We burned it last night, right after our handfasting ceremony,” said Julia.

“You shouldn’t have done that!” said Carin Asbury. “The magic in that candle bones to spirits together, especially if it is burned during lovemaking. If one of you dies the other will die!”

“We said as much during our vows,” so, Julia.

Roman, however, frowned at the Fire Priestess. “Are you saying that if I’m hit by a car and Julia is nowhere near, she’ll still die? Literally die?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying!” said Carin Asbury. She looked at him sternly. “Young man, if you truly love this woman, you will go to the Guardians, and ask the Fool, who can break any curse, to undo the spell you have put upon yourselves.”

They thanked her but refused to promise anything.

“Are you having second thoughts?” Julia asked, seeing that Roman looked unhappy now. “Are you afraid of losing your life if I lose mine?”

“Just the opposite,” he said. “I’m far more likely to have a short life than you.
